Capital of Kansas

Norton, the county seat of Norton [NT] county, is located on Prairie Dog Creek in northwestern Kansas. Since its early history, Norton has been on major transportation routes. Now, Highways 36, 283, and 383 serve the area as well as a railroad, operating over tracks that were once part of the Rock Island.

It's an attractive city with a beautiful hillside park on the south side of town and a bustling shopping district downtown. There are several attractions to see in the area:

  • Station 15, a replica of a early stagecoach station equipped with period furnishings, is in a roadside park beside highway 36. Buffalo Bill, Billy the Kid, and Horace Greeley all passed through this stage depot.
  • The Gallery of Also Rans on the mezzanine of the First State Bank features photos and biographies of unsuccessful candidates for president.
  • Norton County Historical Society and Museum is preserving the memories and artifacts of those who lived before and those who are living now.
  • Keith Sebelius Reservoir, constructed in 1964, is three miles southwest of Norton. It was designed to cover about 2200 acres
  • Prairie Dog State Park on the north side of the lake has a 19th century adobe house and the 1886 Hillmon school in addition to varied vegetation, a prairie dog village, and large assortment of wildlife..
  • The Norton Wildlife Area covers 6,500 acres and offers a variety of outdoor recreation around the lake including swimming, boating, camping, hunting, and wildlife watching.
